(By “Ibrox. ”) The first round of tho Westland Association’s competition ended on Sunday last, Blackball being the leaders with six points to their credit. The games last week were, Runanga v. Blackball, end Greymouth v. Aloonlight. The uncertainty of football was once more exemplified, the fancied teams in these games, Runanga and Aloonlight both suffering defeat. “Ibrox” considers the GreymouthMoonlight game the best local game he has seen this season. The Grey team 'eft Greymouth minus two of their best pl- yers, Sharp and Howie, a_nd, in addition fielded two new chums at the j.ame, and were anything but confident of achieving victory. The Aloonlight team showed a sportsmanlike spirit in allowing the Grey Club to play the two Blackball players, A. Clark and W Balderstone, as substitutes. In reviewing the Grey-Af oonlight game the pl: yers are to be congratu lated on the friendly spirit in which the gamp was played, there being no incident to which anyone could take exception. The ground was in good order and once the players got settled down, a real g<l»d exhibition was given, play being fast ami interesting. Strange as it may seem, in view of the score, Moonlight always seemed to be having the best of it, their midfield play being good to watch, but they seemed unable to get the ball between the sticks. On the other hand, the Aloonlight. defence had an off-day, both goalkeeper and backs being uncertain. Greymouth pracally scored every time they got near the go: 1. Of the plavers, Bennett, in goal, had some good shots to deal with, bin was in form and handled everything that came his way. The hacks, Smith and Balderstone, both played finely, get ting I heir side out of many dangerous-looking situations, and Henderson w: s thi l pick of the half backs. He worked like a trojan, his game being a big improvement on his display against the Aussips. A. Chirk of Blackball, who played right half for Greymoulh, is only a young player, but is distinctly promising and had the opposing wing forwards generally under control. Gray, at centre forward, was the pick of th<‘ front rank, being ablv by Crompton. For Aloonlight, Wilson, in goal, ami ilogg and Jolly, at black had an off day. Hogg started well but fell away •nd was probably feeling tin' effects of bis hard games against the Aussios. Quibell was the pick of the halfbacks and played a fine gamo, being ably supported by McDonald and Kerr 1 he f orwards all did well and combined nicely al times, but in this game thev struck the Greymouth defence at its best. From all accounts in the game a't Runanga where tho home team played Blackball, piny was keen and vigorous at times unnecessarily so. It is undei’

stood all the new blood gave a good aecount of themselves. The New Zealand team proved to be too pool for the Aussies, Canterbury have also beaten them since. Tho Australian team seems to have the fatal weakness of not being able to shoot when nearing goal. If this defect is remedied the Aussies could be given a big chance of winning the majority of their remaining games. A REEFTON MOVE. A movement i n foot here to form a Football Association, and, to this end a match is being arranged between A the Waiuta and Reefton Soccer ers. There are a large number of ver players from the “cold Country’ the district, so there should be no
