LEAGUE FOOTBALL

i?y J oueh Line. 1 ) Ine League competitions were continued las'. Saturday in glorious weather betore a large attendance of the juildic at the lie, reatiou Ground. Three mat dies were played and ail were of a high class naiuie. The third grade game was a surprisingly good game for boys and th..- winners (Kohiuoors), although tiie lighter team, put up a hard go against their adversaries. The Kuminga team were unlucky on several occasions, but faulty handling of the oval prevented them scoring. For Kohinoor Cooper was the outstanding back, showing great judgment in his attack. He was ably supported by Carruthers, whilst Goodall and Hannan also showed promise. In the forwards, Boswell was the pick and this player bids fair to make good. His game on Saturday was worthy of a higher grade. Morrissey and Stanton also showed out frequently. In the Runanga team, Connolly was the most conspicuous player and had he been given more of the ball he would have probably pulled his team through. Brown (2) were the other backs who showed out, whilst in the forwards, Tall-entyre and Russell were always profit the junior game Rivals v. Runauga, the former fully upheld the position they have established and ran out winners by 21 to 2 after a good exhibition of football, in which Brislane excelled himself. This player made a sensational run from half way and, giving- the dummy to no less than six of the Runanga team, he scored in a nice position. It was truly a line bit of work and earned applause from, the crowd present. McCabe, although not quite recovered from, an injury, played well and transferred his passes well. \V. MeGirr also was prominent, and is a big factor in this team. In the forwards Fraser. Fisher and O’Connor were conspicuous and initiated several scoring rushes. The Rival team have now won 5 matches out of six played, and are going well for the championship. With the inclusion of H. Priug a forward from the Star Club (Rugby) they will be strengthened somewhat. Perhaps I am not fur out when I term the Kohinoor and Runuuga senior game as the most exciting game played on the liec. since the League game started. It was fast and open throughout. and not until the linal whistle blew was there a dull moment. The Kohinoor team, have shown marked improvement in their last two matches, and if they go along the way they are will be a hard proposition in the concluding round. They were unlucky in not winning on Saturday, but this is all in the game and has to be taken with the rest. This team comprises the finest pack of forwards in the competition, and in Mahony they have a line stamp of a forward both in close and open play. The forwards completely nonplussed the Runanga backs, who took few opportunities. It would be hard to single out many of the plavcr.. as. in my opinion, they all played a sound game, and the next time these teams meet should provide a firstclass game. Runanga played their usual solid game, awl are the most consistent team in the grade. They should be fighting out the final aga?* for the Pollard Cup. A noteworthy feature of this game was the fact that penalty goals comprised the scores on both sides, and throughout the whole game only three force downs took place. Flavin" on Sunday at Blackwater, the visiting team put it over the Northern Reps, by 16 to 6, which was received by all as a surprise. The Waiuta team are a tough proposition on their own ground and it is saying something for the Red and Blacks to beat them there. The result of this game places Blackball in the lead for the senior cup, with 7 points, Runanga Being next with 6. As there is another round to go the competition is netting very interesting indeed. The correct position of the teams in the various grades is as follows (in the junior grade the Brunner matches have been deleted): —
