MEETING OF COMMITTEE
The: usual monthly meeting of the Committee was held- last evening, and was attended by Messrs G.Svveetman (Chairman) R. C." Forsyth, R. Williams, A. Doig. W. Boucher, J. Weaver, and W. Blair.
RECTOR' f, REPORT. The Rector .reported fnr the -month of July as follows:—
Primary Department. —The. average roll no. was 240 boys and 252 girls, total sot; average attendance was 220 boys, and 21 5 girk. total 435: the average no. of absentees was 6fi.
Secondary Department. — The average roll no. wns T-,;fi boys and 13.A girls, total 27.2; the average attendance was t 3 boys and 13 girls, total 26. N The average no. of absentees was 1.2. Blaketown.— The average roll no. was 64 boys, and" 40 girls, total 113.; the average attendance was 57 boys and 43 girls, total too. ; the average no. of absentees was T3.
(Miscellaneous.— A B:ble Class was conducted by the Yen. Archdeacon York, of the jst, the 2nd, and the oth. Miss Dunn has been absent through' illness, since the 20th. The report was adopted. BLAKETOWN SCHOOL.
Mr. Weaver said in ''company with Mr. Will: am s he had informed tht chairman of the Education Board, through Mr. Kilgour. of the work rerequired at the Blaketown school. Mr Bignell harT agreed that the work was necessary, and gave instructions that :t be-' carried out. Mr. Weaver said the work was now progressing facforily. Several minor repairs were also being attended to. — Report received. VISTTING COMMITTEE'S ■ REPORT. IMr. Williams, for the visiting com mitee, said both the Blaketown and main schools had been visited and everything was satisfactory. The head master, however, had stated that as dressmaking was now a compulsorysubject, a few tables were irequired for this work. Some down pipe was also wanted for the Blaketown school. — It was decided that these requirements be supplied. SCHOOL CONCERT. Mr. Doig said Mr. Holder had recently informed him that if it was the intention to hold the usual school concert in aid of the prize fund, he would v be pleased to assist, in training the children in singing or in any way that" would help on the school. The chairman said' the offer was a very generous one, and he would move that a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Blair, Doig and the mover, be set up to cooperate with Mr. Holder in thie promoting of a concert — Motion carried. GENERAL. • ! • The bible in Schools question was introduced, but after some discussion it was decided to leave the. matter in obeyance in the meantime. Mr. Forsyth" sais he thought the school committee should give every support to the Education Board in its resolution protest : ng against the provisions of the new Education Act and prevent, if possible this district being brought under the Canterbury Board. I Members agreed with Mr. Forsyth. luit it was- explained that the Education Board's resolution on the matter had been sent forward to the Government. The secretary stated that the sum of ;£iq 10s had been collected to date by the collector of the full fund. •'Messrs Doig and Boucher were ap pointed a visiting committee for the month.
