BAND NOTES

(By «B Flat.' 3 )

It is hardly necessary to remind intending: competitors in the band quartette .event at the forthcoming Greymouth competitions that entries close on Wednesday next, August 12th, with the) secretary. '.Air. J. F.. Wilson, P.O. Box 07, Greymouth. This •of course :s the first year that the Society has included such an event in its schedule, and "it behoves the bands of^thc Coast to show . their appreciation of the progressive spirit of the Society by making an entry that will more than justify thfr^committee for their action.

Preliminaries arc well under way in connection with the benefit concert ♦o Mr. Stern Young, and the date has been definitely fixed for Tuesday. S-P---■ember ist. The Rnmncr Band Mins trels axe working up one of their unique programmes, and with the assistance of Greymouth talent, the concert promises to be a decided success.

A Blackball correspondent states that after being practically a. dead letter since the strike the members of the Citizens' Band ha.ye reorganisd, and judging by the enthusiasm shown will soon be back to their old form. Our old friend, Mr. George Kerr, who has lately returned from Australia, has taken charge of the baton, and ne w'M Iwre the assistance of eighteen of the old members. The band has entered for the quicksc-o competition to be held in Westport on Labour Day and no doubt will acquit themselves creditably. The band is assured o f the support and best wishes of the residents of Blackball.

A message from Westport states that the Westport Labour Union is making complete arrangements for holding a sports miceting at Cape Foulwind on Labour Day, with a band contest as the star feature. Eight bands have notified their intention to compete, the six local and Blackball and Brunner. Reefton Band is unfortunately engaged at the Reefton Hospital Carnival, and regrets htat it cannot be a competitor. It is hoped, however, that ' Nelson will be induced to send along a band, and that others on the Coast may find it convenient to enter the contest. The prize mon.ey is £20 and ,£lO, wi-th a special prize for the steadiest march through Palmerston Street. I n order that the bands not financially strong and be able to compete it has been decided that .no points shall be deducted for lack of uniforms. The meet ing is to take place at 'Cape Foulwind and with such an admirable feature in the programme ? should prove a b'g attraction.

A movement is on foot in Reefton to raise funds for providing the band with a^new^set of instruments ,and with that purpose in view a .well-atten-ded meeting of ladies was held in the bnndrooni last week when it was decid ed to work up a "bazaar. The sejec-

ting of a suitable date, and the matter of forming the different committees was held over till the next meeting. Great enthusiasm is being shown in the matter, and everything points to its being crowned with success.
