(Reed. 29th. 5.45 p.m) MELBOURNE, Feb 29. There was dull weather for the opening day of the V.R.C Autumn meeting. The reserves looked splendid, and the course was in good order. The Talbots and a large crowd were present, but the attendance was not equal to that of last year. A good field turned out for the opening race, and with the exception df a spill it was a good race. Portcullis fell and brok c his shoulder, and had to be shot. Little excitement centred on the St. Leger, the result being fully expected. Mountain King was in fine fettle, and had his own way from the start. The results are: — Pines Hurdles — Sustain 1, Coronation 2, Paroloot 3 10 others ran. Won by six lengths. Time 3.4*7. St. Leger — Mountain King 1, Peru 2, Lady Rylstone 3. Mountain King jumped" off with Peru and Lady Rylstone, all pulling. Mountain King passed the stand two lengths ahead of Peru and 4 lengths of Lady Rylstone. At the far sid c Mountain King was a length in front of P_eru. Approaching the straight Lady Rylstone spurted, but Mountain King got away entering the straight unextended and won by four lengths. Time 3.6^. Newmarket— Scotland (Hood) 1, Grenadier (King) 2, Akin Foo (1B0Iton) 3 Miss Bobby and Currandooley were scratched. Scotland was the first, to show out from Antonio, Dusky Morn and Tangaroa on the rails. After a furlong Traguir was leading from North Head. Step Out and Fllli Fogi. Passing* the tan Filli iFogi, Dusky Morn, Currandooley, Soctland, Tangaroa. Into the course proper Scotland lead from Dusky Morn. Across the track the New Zealand horse then mad c way for Grenadier, Akin Foo and Munjeet. iTraguir was last. Won by two lengths. Time 1.14 3. The race was run in a light rain. Sires Prodtlce — Mother Goose 1 , The Brewe r 2, Kudan 3. Barley Brew also started. Won by a head. Time ■1.14 J. Essendon . Stakes— Apologue 1. Tulkeroo 2, Booran 3. Won easily by four lengths, same distance between second and third. iTime 2.375. The race was run in rain. Brunswick Stakes— Sivori 1, Lady Esme 2. Lancasterite 3. 10 others ran. Won by i^ lengths. Time 2.93.
