(Reed. 29th, g.2S a.m.) HOTBART, Feb. 29. There was a very large attendance at th c opening of the Athletic Championship meeting. The weather was dull, but fine at the close of the day's proceedings. New South Wales scored three championships. New Zealand two, Tasmania one. Owing to the 'Press being kept at a cousiderable distance from the funning track they were not able to give a satisfactory description of the racing. . Z 'The results are: — 100 yards— Barker 1, Morgan 2, Fay 3. Won by six inches. Time 10 1-5 sees. Mile Walk — Kerr i, Stubbcrficld 2, Smith 3. Won by ten yards. Time 7-23 3-5-Running High Jump— Orbell sft io in, 1, Maher sft 9 in2 4 , Scott^sft 8 in, 3. Orbell jumped beautifully, and it was thought that he would equal the record of sft 1 i£da, but he failed. Mile Running — Clemens 1!, Burrowes 2, TReford 3. iThis was a great go. Burrowes leading till nearly home, ■when Clemens put in a fast run, and won by less "than a foot, the others close up. Time 4.38. 120 Yards Hurdles — Stewart and Davis" tied .in the final, and ar c to run off on Monday. Muray won his ,heat j in fine style, but could not pace it with j the others. Time 16 1-5 sees. | Putting the Shot— O'Reilly 38 ft 1, I Kearney 35 ft 1 in, 2, Maher 34ft 9 in | 3. 440 Yards. — Barker 1, Davis 2, Fisher 3. Barker frist led, 'but was displaced by Fisher and Davis. When within 100 yards of home Barker put in a capital sprint and won easily by 10 yards, with 4 yards between the second and third. Time 51 sees. Davis's time was 51 4-5, and the first two men receive special badges for running th c distance under the standard time. One "Mile Walk— Ford (Tasmania) 30 sees, 1, Hose (Tasmania) 20 sees 2, Stubberfield 10 sees 3. Time 8.4.
