VOLCANIC ACTIVITY

AUCKLAND, Jan. 23

A flow of lava from the Savaii volcano in Samoa on December 28th tqok with it the remaining houses of Toapaipai village. The only buildings now remaining are the Catholic and the London Mission Churches. The damage is very great .Last year the Toapaipai copra crop was 300,0001 b. The lava is now within fifty feet of the Malacola plantations, but they are not in immediate danger.

The Premier denies that Mr Macintosh, General Manager of the Bank of New Zealand, is leaving the institution owing to a difference of opinion concerning the Government's banking account.

Mr P. W. Robertson, of Wellington, the Rhodes scholar for New Zealand, who . went to Oxford last October, has won an open science scholarship at Trinity College valued at £80. Speaking during a visit to Pahiatua district, the Premier said at the forthcoming session of Parliament, proposals will be submitted for a remission of taxation on the necessaries of life. TWO YOUNG MEN DROWNED. NELSON, January 29. A drowning fatality occurred at Upper Matakitaki on Friday evening, whereby two young men named Arthur Thornton and Joshua Scholtfield lost their lives. They had followed the funeral of the late Mr William White as far as O'Rourke's Hotel. The river was quite low on crossing, but when returning in the evening it was swollen greatly. Both were attempting to cross the river on one horse, and it is thought that in the semi-darkness they did not notice the rise in the stream. Both were good swimmers. Scholcfield's bpdy was found ncai\ Mr Fred Lester's,- about 10 miles from the scene of the accident, and Thorn ten's by Mr Morel, . when returning from the Bellvue dredge, about three miles from Murchison. Thornton and Scholefield were halfbrothers, single, and aged 26 and 27' years. Thornton was generally known as Arthur Scholefield. SUPPOSED SUICIDE AUCKLAND, Jan 29. A lad twelve years of age, named Harry Bosanko, was found dead at Te Awamutu to-day with a bullet wound through his temple.
