The report of the Royal Commission on charities xecommeneed that no further Govern menb aid be given to a number of subsidised charitable institutions other than hospitals. The concentration of funds and Government supervision is considered to give much better results, and that as soon as local government is established throughout the colony the outdoor will be thrown entiroly on the local rates. It is generally admitted that Want's resignation makes the situation clearer. Reid states that Want gave no reason but the unsatisfactory state of his health. This is probably as much the reason as his opposition to Federation. In the Assembly the Premier asked the Houso to withhold ite opinion in Neild's case till the result of the official enquiry is known. The debate was adjourned. A bill providing for the sale of liquor at certain hours on Sunday was read a second time by 37 to 22. Brisbane, April 19. Wilson, who stands remanded in connection with the murder of the boy Hill at Oxley, was found guilty of attempting to commit an unnatural offence at Ipswich and was sentenced to seven years' penal servitude. In reference to Father La Roche's charges of inhumanity against Captain Sturdee at Samoa the aocoanfc oi an eye witness states that what really happened was that 500 Malietoana expecting an attack, took refuge in the boats around the Porpoise. A squall blew the nert day rendering the position untenable. Sturdee took 500 on board, the rest going on board the Falk by arrangement until the weather cleared. None of the boats capsized or were there any occupants drowned.
Melbourne, April 19. The body of an old man named Butler was found in a sack mutilated at Mansfield. Murder is suspected.

Sydney, Aprill9. The Legislative Council passed the second reading of the Federal Enabling Bill on the voices in Committee.
An amendment providing for a minimum vote at the Referendum was rejected by 30 votes to 23.
After inserting a stipulation that two months shall intervene before the Referendum be taken the Council passed the Bill without further amendment and the measure was subsequently i_ut through ifcs final stages.
