Christchurch, April 19. Police Constable Victor Austin has been arrested on a charge of stealing L 6 from George Jones, a prisoner in his custody. He was remanded on bail.

Auckland, April 19. At a meeting of the National Council of Women the following were elected : — President Mra Shepherd, vice-presidents Mesdames Daldy, Sievewright and Taker ; secretary Miss Wells ; treasurer Mrs Williamson (re-elected). Resolutions were passed in favor of stricter enforcement of the liquor laws, equal pay for equal work, the Democratic principle of Government by majority, and against increased armaments and militarism in the colonies.

The police traced a woman answering her description to the -North Shore, where she bought a bottle of laudanum from a chemist there, where sho was last seen alive. At Pahtatua a meeting was held to discuss the question of constructing an electric railway to Paugaroa, the idea being to tap Makure Gorge for the necessary power. A deputation was appointed to interview the Premier as to what concessions would be made. The estimated cost i5L165,000.
