We understand that a special meeting of the Grey County Council will be held on Monday week to consider the question of the message from the Under-Secretary of Public Works re Nelson Creek bridge. In connection with thi3 message, there is a very ugly rumor afloat in Town. It is stated that the County Chairman received the message prior to the adjournment of the Council, and that with the knowledge he possessed he allowed contracts to be signed. If this is true, such conduct is reprehensible in the highest degree, and. nothing can justify the action of the County Chairman. If he had the information from the Government prior to the adjournment of the Council, it was his duty to have communicated its contents to the Council, and not to have allowed any contract to be Bigned. It is necessary to probe thi3 matter to the bottom, and the Committee appointed at the meeting to communicate with the Government should ascertain at what hour the telegram was sent from Wellington, and what hour it was delivered to the County Chairman. If the message from the Government was delivered prior to the signing of the contracts, and the Government should after inquiry, withhold the money for the erection of the bridge at the site now proposed, then either the County Council or the County Chairman personally would become liable for any damages arising from breach of contract.
