Our newly-elected member, Mr Masters, has not waited long before commencing hia duties as a representative. On Thursday he telegraphed to the Hon Minister of Mines regarding the promise made by him relative to expediting the forwarding of Sir John Coode's report on the Greymouth harbor work. In answer t> Mr Masters's telegram, the following evasive and unsatisfactory reply was received : — " Wellington, September 11, 1879. "E. Masters, E«q., M.H.R., Greymouth — Harbor Works. — My previous telegram was forwarded to Sir George I Grey aa head of the Marine Department. I am again wiring to him at Christchurch. I am told data for Greymouth report would reach Sir John Coode about a week ago. Government will expedite matter much as they can. — W. Gis B3RNE." This is simply nothing, and we trust Mr Masters and th 6 citizens of Greymouth will not rest aatified with this answer. There is nothing to tell us that Sir John Coode has been communicated with, and we knew, a3 well as Mr Gisborne, that if the information required went away from New Zealand by the June mail it would reach Sir John Coode about a week ago, so this information is simply " thank you for nothing." What | we want to know is whether nothing further can be done till next July or August after the two tip heads meet. For, as was truly said at the interview with Mr Gisborne, and admitted by Mr O'Connor, the present harbor works are simply useless. Our representatives must j inaist upon a definite answer being given j as to when the report can be obtained, for it is absurd to expect that the works should ba allowed to stand still for months. Since the above was in type, the following additional telegram wa3 received by Mr Masters from the Minister of Mines : — " Wellington, September 12, 5 p.m. "E. Masters, Esq., Greymouth. — Harbor works. — Sir John Coode has been telegraphed to to expedite plans as much as possible, and to wire probable date of forwarding them. — W. Gisborne."
