While the Weather Bureau reported that the present drought in the central and north-west area ,is more critical than those of 1930-and 1931, at this. time, of the year, officials .stated that unless general rains come in the next fortnight to save the maize crop, the Government may face the necessity of buying cattle for slaughter, ,asy.it, did .during, the; 1931 drought, when 7.000,000 head were purelmscd. . Mr. Roosevelt has ordered a study of the employment possibilities for farmers under-the , Agricultural Adjustment Adminstration .which modified the 1930 -soil conservation programme, to encourage farmers t.o plant move food and feed crops to offset the present losses. ‘ The Bureau of-Agriculture Economies reported that tlio world’s wheat stocks are the lowest in nine years. The American wh at, carry-over is 125,000,000 bushels, the smallest sinco July 1, 1928.- The surplus m the principal exporting countries is 3S8,000,(-00 bushels compared with 532,000,000 ■ ’ bushels last year. and 789 000,OG’O bushels in 1933.
