Householders and tradesmen are feeling the general scarcity, w'-lth the result that Australian and British florins are coming more into use. There is a strong feeling in commercial circles that half-crowns which are all from the Imperial mint, are making their way out of the country to Australia. England, and possibly ,Japan. It is staled that commercial concerns fn Australia., have been paying sums considerably over the token value for Imperial silver coinage. A visitor in Sydney recently found during a casual purchase in a shop that a- British half-crown fetched good- to the value of 2s Pd. AUCKLAND. May 27.
The shortage of half-crowns iis acute is Auckland. The accountant of a large city firm had been refusing to pay out half-crowns lor a month past, though it eagerly accepted them.
The shortage is attributed to exporting. and it is also eonpeoiuml that people are hoarding silver coin »n the hope of a profit when the silver coinage is introduced.
