ROBBERIES BY PRISON ESCAPEE

COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE

Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 25. Basil Hodgson, 25, a laborer, who escaped from Waikuuc prison camp on April 21, and wa s recaptured in Auckland on May 15, pleaded guilty to-day to escaping, aud also to- 12 other charges of breaking and entering dwellings.

The police produced a statement in which the accused said that as the result of previous treatment- from a certain warder, and treatment on April 21; be decided ou tbe spur, of the moment to escape. He pleaded guilty under strong provocation. He was committed to the. Supreme Court- for sentence ou all charges

FARM LABORER LOSES £7 BY FRAUD TWO MEN AWAIT SENTENCE Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 25. Stating that he had been offered pdds of 200 to one on a horse belonging to Adam File, a hotelkeeper. Herbert hangman Oliver, a farm laborer. was the main police witness against- Edward Mountford Tunnechhe and John Rupert Lawrence, who were charged in the Supreme Court with obtaining £7 by fraud, conspiracy to. dhraud, and theft.

Oliver said he had been induced by Tulinedilfe to give the latter £v, ostensibly to back a sure winner. Lawrence produced £2O in witness- presence to back the horse and gave the money to Tunuccliffc, Oliver following suit with his £7. He was to meet the two men later to collect, but they disappeared. The jury returned a verdict that both were guilty of conspiracy to defraud and false pretences, and the prisoners were remanded tor sentence.

PRISONERS SENTENCED

In the Supreme Court to-day, the following prisoners were sentenced: Reginald George R-isbridger, 18, two years’ probation ; Victor Bass. 43, and George Edwards, 33, breaking and entering and theft, reformative- detention for a period not exdeedng two years.
