POLICE SURPRISE BURGLARS BATONS USED BEFORE MEN CAPTURED •'‘REGULAR DONNYBROOK’ ’
(Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, May 25. George Grainger,, 27, Patrick Gannon, 25, and James Tanner, 25, all seamen, were charged to-day with breaking and entering the Supply Stores warehouse, Colombo street, and committing' theft. They nvcrc remandedl to May 26. Tho police stated that the men were discovered in the shop last evening. The quick, thought qf a. Post and Telegraph Department officer and smart work by four police officers were responsible last evening for the arrest of the three men who, it is alleged, had broken into the Supply Stores, Ltd., at the corner of Colombo and Lawson streets, Sydenham. The men were found inside the premises, hut made a fight for it, and batons had to he used.
Warned by a postal official living opposite, after seeing lights in the stores, the police officers- entered quietly. They came on the three men in) The darkness, anditook them completely by surprise. Two of the men made an attempt to- escape. They were tackled 'by the policemen, and .for a few minutes there was a “regular Donnybrook”, the police being compelled to draw their batons. In a few minutes the three men were under arrest.
