RELIEF MEN STRIKE
TROUBLE IN SOUTHLAND PROTEST AG AINST DISMISSAL OF TWO AIEN (Press Association,', INVERCARGILL, May 16. Twenty-six men, comprising tho majority of those in the Kapuka camp for unemployed, went on strike this morning, as a protest against tho dismissal- by tho Public Works Department of the-chairman and secretary of the camp committee for, it is alleged, writing a letter to the press complaining that the conditions at camp were becoming “absolutely unbearable.” Tho strikers requested that the two men should bo reinstated, and upon the Department refusing their request, came in a body to Invercargill, and interviewed! the Alayor. They 'did not return to camp. The Mayor Stated later that he is to meet the strikers to-morrow morning, when he hoped to have something definite for them. In tho meantime, he would see what the Department bad 1 to say in reply.
