EXCITING CROSSING

BISHOP AT FLOODED RIVER PONTOON OF OIL DRUMS. (Special to the Times.) OPOTIKI. Jan. 23. The Bishop of Aoiearoa. , Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, accompanied by the Rev. Wfiaretiui Rangi. passed through Opotiki on Saturday on their return from a visit to the East Coast. They had quite an exciting experience in crossing the Raukokore River, which was in high flood. The Bishop wag un able to delay Ids visit further, and several willing Alaoris built a pontoon of benzine drums, with heavy ropes attached to either end. AYfien the car was proceeding across the river, great consternation was caused by the breaking of one or the main ropes. However, with some difficulty the car reached the other side and, though the engine and car had been flooded, they were able to proceed on Saturday morning. From Opotiki the Bishop went on to Rotorua and Taupo and then will go home to Hastings.
