STOKER’S DEATH. (Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 14. The circumstances which led to the death of a stoker. Cyril William Nesbitt, 22, of H.M.S. Dunedin between Upper Hutb and Trentham early on the morning of October 30, wore inquired into by Mr. E, Page, S.M. The evidence showed that two men had been at a local hotel, and on the way buck to camp at Trentham the deceased became drowsy, and lay down on the road. His companion. Leading Stoker Toy, sat down beside him, and later both were struck by a motor lorry. Tho deceased was taken to the police station and then to a doctor. In finding that the deceased was accidentally killed by being run over by a motor-lorry, Mr. Page said the lorry was badly lighted, and did not comply with the regulations. He was not satisfied, However, that even -with good lights the accident could have been avoided, for the two men, in dark-blue uniforms, and not moving would be hard to pick up.

YOUNG MAORI DROWNED. CANOE CAPSIZES ON WAIKATO RIVER. COMPANION SWIMS ASHORE. (Frees Association-* HAMILTON, Nov. 14. A young Maori, Jack Hapi, aged 23, or Mercer, was drowned in the Waikato River near Mereer last week when ftts canoe capsized. Hapi and auother native set out to cross'the river about 12.45 p.m., about a mile below the Mercer Wharf A heavy wind made the surface of the wafer choppy, and when cut in tlie stream the canoe capsized. Hapi’s struck out for the bank and managed to reach it, but Hapi clung to the upturned can oe. His plight was noticed from the Mercer Wharf, and one of the Roose Shipping Company’s launches, in charge of Mr. J, Waller, set nut to his rescue, out before the canoe was reached, the mail has disappeared. Dragging operation have bean in hand, but so far the body has not been recovered. In the locality of the accident the bottom of the river is very uneven, and the depth of the water* varies from sft. to 30ft. making dragging difficult.

ENGINEER COLLAPSES ON SHIP. (Preae Association.! BLENHEIM. Nov. 14. Walter Irwin, 50, cf Abbot street, Wanganui, chief engineer of the scow Echo, collapsed and died in the engine room as the vessel was casting off from Blenheim this morning.
