WAIKOHU COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Waikohu County Council, at' Te Karaka yesterday, was,presided over by the chairman, Mr. T. B. Spence ‘ and other councillors-present were: Crs. A. A. Fraser, IT. H. Dods, M. Doyle, G. H. Monce, J. Hope, and H.J. F. Tombleson. ’ An oiler to look after the council’s tree plantation at Waikohu freo ol charge for a stated period, was received from Mr. F. Cridland.— This was left to the engineer and member for the riding to arrange. Notice of consideration of an application to establish an omnibus service was received from the town clerk, Gisborne. The Auckland Manufacturers’ Association forwarded a copy of the manufacturers’ directory anrl askecJ the council to extend,-preference, as far as possible, to New Zealand made goods.—Received. Messrs Burhard and Bull submitted for sealing by the council’ a form of agreement in reference to carting of timber between’AVaitangirua and Motuhora.—The seal of the council was affixed. The engineer-in-chief, Public Works Department, wrote asking, for information as to heavy traffic license fees, and as to the effect of heavy motor traffic on the roads.—lt was decided to supply the information.

Tho chairman of the Main Highways Board advised that the subsidy on main road maintenance would be paid on a basis of £2 for £l, as from April 1 last.—Received. The chairman of No. 4 DistrictHighways Council advised that the Main Highways Board was making a tour of this district, and would reach the boundary at Motu on November 30 on its way to Gisborne.— It was decided that as many councillors as could do so should meet the board at Motu and accompany the members through the county. The health inspector’s report showed that there had been three cases of diphtheria and one of scarlet fever during the month. Owing to leaving the district, the ooundkeeper at Matawai tendered his resignation which was aeepted, and it was left to the engineer and Cr. Hope to appoint a successor. Or. Tombleson reported that in company with the engineer he had met the ratepayers on the Motu front - road to discuss the metalling of further portions of the clay road. The engineer was authorised to carry on with the metalling at a point decided upon by tile meeting of ratepayers. The tender of Messrs. Fitzpatrick and Mclntyre of £llOO for the formation of on© mile of the Tauinata ’•oad was accepted. The clerk was instructed to call I'or applications to close at next meeting for the position of dog tax collector for 1929.

At the request of Cr. Monce, a "rant of £lO was made to open up the stock track to Mr. Steggall’s woolshed. Cr. Doyle asked that permission he given to the Te Karaka Town Board fo put in a traffic dome at the corner of the main road opposite the hotel. —Permission was granted, council'nrs agreeing that the corner was a very awkward one. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer (Mr. A. G. Lucas) presented the following report: “Motu riding.—Owing to most of the metal being railed to Otoko, only i small amount of metalling and scarifying has been completed on the Motuhora-Matawai road. The men who were employed on this work are engaged putting in new; culverts and making a small deviation. Owing to the 4ft. pipes not coming to hand, tho mam road bridge near Peddle’s chat broke down has not yet been replaced Several new culverts have fveen put in oh the main road in front of the railway station, and some regrading has been done by the surfacemen. The Monnui bridge and approaches are iust about completed. The site Tor the Scott’s creek bridge has been surveyed oli' and plans are m hand. Owing to the weather. I nave been unable to peg off other work on the Moanui road. The approaches to the Fall’s creek bridge are completed thus eliminating the last forcT on the Korunga road. The surfaceman has been engaged putting in culverts and building up the road beyond the Koranga bridge. The contract for widening on the R,akauroa-Tabora track is proceeding saxisSactorily. The contractor for getting spaivls at Matawai for the mam. highway has about 500 cubic yards already spawled. The contractor has made a start with the deviation near Clark’s Hat; this deviation cuts out live sharp bends. Some widening has 'been done on Clark’s Hat. The Public Works contractors for widening and regrading between Hine's hill and Rakauroa have started their contracts. Maintenance work has been carried out.in the usual manner.

“Waihuka riding.—Concrete pipes were sent up to the Hakauroa-Ta-liora road to replace culverts that have fallen in. The contractor on the deviation on the main road is making good progress, this work being done by the Public Works Department. Owing to the wet weather idle main road is now m a very rough state, but will be attended to as soon as the grader is available. The contractor has completed the earth work up to I'ombleson’s deviation, and a start is now being made to spawl this section, the spawls having been crushed during the winter. Men are engaged putting hi the sft pipe culvert at the creek near the overhead bridge. Approximately 600 cubic yards of metal for the top course from Mr. Tonibleson’s has been delivered at Otoko, and will be put on as soon as the spawls have been laid. A slip again occurred on Oliver road; this has been cleared, hut several parts, of this road are in, a very boggy state and several culverts want renewing; The Mangatawa slip e lias dropped considerably, arid I have made arrangements to start on this work this week; a new road will have to he made on a (uglier level. Cr. Tombleson and I attended a meeting of ratepayers on the front road, and it was agreed to metal the had places , from Mr. Wright’s to the Peach Tree bend. The contractor on Smart’s road is making steady progress. Maintenance work has been carried out as usual. . ' ... “Waipaoa i;iding.—A team is still engaged cleaning up slips on the Huirua. road; this road has „ been cleared sufficiently to allow cars' to get through. A small bridge on the Waitangi road tell owing to the skies giving way, and : timber has been sent up to have this repaired. Tenders have been called fer this meeting for metalling 120 chain's of Armstrong road. Maintenance work has been attended to. “Marigatu riding.—The giader . is now 1 engaged on the Maugahamia road, but has been, held up on account of the wet weather. The slip near the roadman’s cottage has been attended to, and should hold up for the summer traffic. The usual maintenance work has received attention. “Ngatapa riding.—The crushing plant finished at Robert’s Bluff, and has .proceeded to the Tangihau road. The contractor for collecting spawls it'or the top course from Semmens’ wool shed is proceeding satisfactorily,. ; having delivered approximately 500 buhiciyards of’spawls, and about 250 cubic, yards of. these have been •crushed? The contractor for carting maintenance metal lias started, and

about 20 chains have been resurfaced. The contractor for carting the shingle from Ngatapa has also made a start on this work. As soon as the roller has completed the rolling of the maintenance metal it- will then proceed to Robett’s Bluff, and the top course metal will be put on this section. The plans for the 23 chains at Mr J. B. Williams’ wool shed have been completed and passed by the Public Works Department; the plaits for the section at Mr O’Brien’s are now being traced, and will be sent in to the Public Works Department for approval shortly. Tenders are called for .this meeting for the formation of the first mile of the Taumata road, **and plans, are now being prepared for the second milo of this road. Ai bridge fell in, on the Tahora road, and I am replacing this with a culvert. The surfaceman has been engaged cleaning up the •Tahora road and I am replacing this with a culvert. The surfaceman lias been engaged cleaning up the Tahora road , and attending to necessary .maintenance work; “Kanakanaia riding.—The bridge at Hokoroa has now “been, renewed, and maintenance work has been carried out. • “Kafaka riding.—The contractor has filled the depots, and completed 'his contract on the main road.
