TWO WHALES LANDED

SUCCESSFUL EXPEDITION NEAR

EAST CAPE.

(Special to tho Times.) OPOTIKI, Oct. 31. The Alaoris at Wliitianga, on the East Coast between Opotiki and Capo Runaway, are now celebrating a successful whaling expedition. Two whales, a cow and a calf, were observed on Saturday, and the Alaoris set out in their whale boats equipped with harpoons, with the intention of capturing them. They harpooned the calf first, but the mother forced the calf down and it disappeared completely. The whalers thereupon attacked the cow, which was successfully harpooned and hauled to the tteach. On Monday the dead calf was wa.sbed ashore. Since the capture tho whalers have been busy cutting up the blubber. A large tank for boiling down went on the launch Waihou today.
