“THE SHOWDOWN.” George. Bancroft, who recently, swept triumphantly to stardom through his work in the sensational drama, “Underworld,” has achieved an 'equally powerful characterisation in “The Showdown,” which holds tho screen for the last time at the Palace to-night. Realising that Bancroft had created a definite niche for himself in the hearts of- theatre audiences, Paramount set out to find a new story for this clever player. In “Tho Showdown” they found a character exactly suited to the star. Bancroft plays the role of a wandering oil driller, into his life comes Mifee men who have followed him from one field after another, because they know be has a sixth sense which tells him where oil can be found. As the struggle between Bancroft and his rivals settles into grim and deadly earnest, a girl suddenly arrives, fresh from the refinements of New York. The situations winch develop from the presence of a gently nurtured girl in this wild spot form a drama from which Bancroft’s genius as an actor shines with even greater lustre than in “Underworld,"” “The Rough Riders” or “Old Ironsides.” Heading the supporting cast are Evelyn Brent. Neil Hamilton. Fred Kohler. Arnold Kent and Lesbo Fenton. “The Showdown” will be screened again this evening.
