STATE SOCIALISM.

FAILS IN AUSTRALIA

United Press Assn, by El. Tel. Copyright

lAusarallan frees Association.)

LONDON, Oct. 22. Dr. Haden Guest, in an article in the Daily Telegraph, expresses tho opinion that Socialism has ■ failed in Australia. Nationalised sugar mills have been de-nationalised in Queensland because, a prominent leader of the Labor Party told Dr. Guest, tbe men would not work properly for a Government concern. After denationalisation the men’s .efficiency increased 30 per cent. Labor Governments in Australia had given up Socialism, but a most active revolutionary minority, with a strong influence in trade unions, had not done so yet, but even hero a. great change had occurred during the past year. This was exemplified in Air. Tom AValsh’s action. Thorn was little doubt that a lot of 'Moscow money was finding its way into Australia. It was Austral:an Labor that made migration to Australia so difficult.

U.S. DEMOCRATS’ POLICY

CONDEMNED BA" MR. HOOVER

(Australian Press Assooiation.) (Australian Press* Assn.l

NEAV

YORK, Oct. 22,

Delivering his first, and probably the last important speech in the east in the heart of the strongest Smith territory, namely New York City, Air Herbert Hoover declared that- the Democrats had revived “a series of proposals which, if adopted, would be a long stop towards the abandonment of our American system, and the surrender to destructive co-oper-ation of governmental conduct of commercial business.” Mr. Hoover thereafter branded as “State socialism” the prohibition, farm relief, and water power proposals advocated by Democratic candidates. Air. Hoover summarised tho. proposals as follows: “It is proposed that we should change from prohibition ip State purchase and the sale of liquor. Also, if their agricultural relief programme means anything, it means that the Government shall, directly or indirectly, buy and sell agricultural products and we are to go into the hydro-electrical power business.”
