ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSN

WELLINGTON, Oct, 23

The annual meeting of the Now Zealand Ccal Miners’ Association was held to-day. The following officers were elected:-—-President, Mr W. D. Holgate; vice-president, Mr A. McKellar; executive, Afessrs W. A. Flavcll, T. S. "Weston, R. Lee, W. Exell, E. S. AVright and G. G. Townsend.

In his presidential address, Mr Holgate stated that the position of the con-l industry was by no means satisfactory. Pits were working too much short time for want of trade. The introduction of the Government-hydro-electric power schemes hail taken the place of coal to some extent, and overseas steamers were, using oil instead of coal. ft. was satisfactory to know that the Railway Department ‘was using over 90 per cent. Now Zealand coal. Mr Holgate also referred to the fact that in recent years a more reasonable and conciliatory spirit had governed the actions of unions, more especially when meeting representatives of the owners. This had proved most beneficial to both sides.
