The engagement is announced of Lykke (Pat) Smith, of Awapuni, Palmerston North, at present on the nursing staff of the Christchurch Public Hospital, to Captain Maurice Buckley, of the Royal Air Force, Christchurch.
The Prime Minister, with Mrs. Coates, and Mr. Frank D. Thomson, head of the Prime Minister’s depart ment, and Mr. T. R. Aicken, private secretary, returned' to Christchurch from the south yesterday morning. Mr. Coates had a day off politics and speech-making. • He attended tho North Canterbury 11-C. meeting at Rangiora yesterday, and left by last night’s ferry steamer on his way to Dargaville.—Press Assn.
The service was fully choral when Miss Eva Jones, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs F, Webb Jones, was married to Antonio, son of Signor Ignaxio Marotta ,of Palermo, Sicily, in the Trinity Methodist Church, at Wanganui. Both bride aiid bridegroom are members of the Melba Grand Opera Company. Hundreds were unable to gain admittance to tho church, where the ceremony was conducted by tho Rev. E. T. Cox and the Rev. John Reid, a brother-in-law of the bride. Tho Italian Consul, Michele Blunno, was present.
That Princess Mary possesses s great charm of personality is wellkuowiv; that she has also a kindly, sympathetic nature was proved some time ago when she visited a certain homo for mothers and babies. The committee, with chairman, vicechairman and other important officials, met her on arrival, fussed about her and presented various local big-wigs to the. distinguished visitor. Finally they ushered her into the seat of honor, ignoring the neat, grey-clad figure of the matron, on whom rested' all the working responsibility of the home. The matron stood quietly at attention, her quick eye roving over the room, seeing that everything was all right. Then the Princess caught sight of her. Without a moment’s hesitation, she leaned towards an official and asked in clear ringing voice; “And am I not permitted to meet the matron?”
