ORMOND SPORTS

FUNCTION MARRED BY RAiIN

A change in tho weather conditions bringing in its wake heavy rain, marred the success of tho Ormond District Sports Club’s annual gathering on its spirts ground adjoining the Waipnoa river at 'Ormond yesterday. Fine, warm atmospheric conditions in the morning and the absence ot counter attractions attracted a largo gathering of town and country residents, frilly J 1,300 being..present, thus creating a new record for the dub in gate takings and attendance, hut the prospects for an excellent day's outing and sports were dissipated shortly after midday, when a southerly sprang up and a heavy shower fell. A little later rain set in in earnest and continued incessantly throughout the afternoon, thus interfering with the running of the events, and, although the officials kept to the programme with a tew minor exceptions the final races were decided over a. yory sodden track in pouring ram. The sprint track in the morning was particularly hard and rather humpy, and the cycling‘ circuit was in a similar condition. All flat and cycling events attracted keen competition, and the public were treated to some exciting finishes m which the majority of the limit men figured prominently. In the sprints, nnd cycling the hackmarkers were considerably over handicapped and could not get up within striking distance of those with good handicaps. This was strikingly illustrated in the heats of the 100yds flat nnd in the short distance cycling events, in which the scratch men did net, have a chance of getting ut> without breaking records. The ladies’ races on the other hand, indicated good handicapping, particularly in flic 75 vards event in which Miss Wilson, from scratch, eras iust beaten on touch. The New Zealand champion registered her best performance in the KKlyds flat, in which she gained the verdict by a battling finish in New Zealand record time of 11 3-5 seconds. She was, assisted by a strong breeze in this race, the direction of the wind having changed in the interim, hut both clocks agreed on the time..

The time recorded by the winno’of the 220 ds. flat was the' most astonishing feat of the day. Off Tim 17yds mark AV. AlcDnnald is.'reported to* have clocked 20 3-ssee.. which is slightly over even time for 200 yards and this aroused considerable speculation as to whether the track eva, tlic full distance. There was no dmibl as tn the time, three watches clocking it, and all were handled hv competent, timekeepers. The. contest between C. G. AlcDornbi. tlm Poverty Bay hali-miler, and A r . Johns, was watched with more than passing interest hv spectators ami amateur athletes alike. .McDonald held in Johns’ pa-ms within a c-unle of ya v ds over the first- lap. whilst, the limit men widened tlm gap. Then Johns cracked on tlm. pec-> in an endeavor to catch them. AF--Donnld following closely until 2" r yards from home, where AlcDonnld passed him end Johns, left la r t, reFred from tlm race. McDonald went on in great style and was well up on the limit men at the finish. The equestrian events also drew :■ li’ro-p number of entrants, who provided the spectators with interesting exhibitions.' of horsemanship and jumping. Results are as follow: —Running.—
