A DONATION OF £SOO

FOR KAHUTIA BOWLING CLUB.

LALY CARROLL’S GENEROSITY

‘Members of the Kahutia Bowling Club have been always greatly indebted to Lady Carroll for. her generous gifts, but her latest contribution to the welfare of the Club far transcends any other similar gift to any social club .in Poverty Bay. Lady Carroll entertained the president and executive of the Club at her residence on Tuesday evening, and in the course of the evening handed a cheque for £SOO to Mr 0. Prince, as a donation towards the building of the new club pavilion. In making the presentation she referred to the fact that the Club bore her grandfather’s name and expressed pleasure at meeting those who were doing so much to make the club one of the leading ones in the Dominion. She considered the present pavilion hardly worthy of the club, and so she made* this gift with the hope that, before long, a more fitting and substantial structure would be erected. In acknowledging this, most generous gift,. Mr O. Prince pointed out what a great stimulus Lady Carroll’s action was to those working for good of the club and he assured her of the real and sincere appreciation felt by all members and of the great value they placed on her interest and friendship towards the club and its members;' He assured her that the new pavilion would bo eminently fitting to. the club, and, moreover, it would be a lasting testimonial to her generosity and thoughtfulness. On behalf of the Club he asked her to accept their warmest appreciation and thanks.—(Great applause.) Messrs A. Sawyer, B. Dudfield, J. A. Eaton, J. R. Kirk and J. Rarkness endorsed Mr Prince’s remarks, and recalled incidents in connection with the history of the club and the acquiring of the present green. Mr F. Goodman then presented the plans of the new building, which would cost something between £ISOO and £2OOO. They had received such support that it was hoped that the building would he erected nv the end of this year. He announced a generous offer of assistance from himself and some friends. Sir James Carroll, the Ariki of the Club, told of Lady Carroll’s deep and sustained interest in the club, which bore the name of her honored ancestor. To associate himself with the objects of his wife he asked thd to accept from himself, apart from the gift of Lady Carroll, the sum or £2oo.—(Great applause.) Lady Carroll then expressed her pleasure tit the kind remarks made and said that she hoped the building would soon he an accomplished fact. During the evening some very enjoyable songs and stories were heard and some excellent dancing by a niece of Lady Carroll witnessed. After supper some pleasant card games passed the time all too quicaly, and the evening concluded with the singing or “Auld Lang Syne,” and the National Anthem.
