ROAD WORKS

ACTIVITIES IN COOK COUNTY. OX MAIN HIGHWAYS. A resume of the highways work carried out in tbfl Cook County during the past month was contained in the following report by the Engineer (Mr. J. J. Keane) submitted to the meeting yesterday:— “Work on main highways is proceeding steadily. On the Coast Road the Council’s plant and men have been engaged between IVhangara and Pakarae. A contractor with five teams has also been employed, carting stone from Knox’s quarry. Some of the Public. Works lorries bare also been delivering stone from IVhangara. A large gang of men lias been employed trimming up the road and breaking the stone. Excellent progress lias been made, and the whole of the bottom course should be completed to the County boundary about the end of next week. The Public Works Department are laying the top course, between Pouawa and IVhangara, and this will shortly ho completed to Wallis’ hill. Stone is still being supplied to tho Public Works Department from nox’s quarry for the bottom course on the Uawa section.

“Gisborne-Wairoa, via Hangaroa and Tiniroto: Formation work lias boon completed to McLaurin’s liomostoad. Lorries are engaged carting spawls from depot near Gray’s, and men are engaged knapping the stone on the road. Additional men will be available from the Coast Bond in a few days and will be pnt on to this road. Extra lorries are also available for the carting of stone. One of the rollers is engaged on this section. On the section south of Tin iroto a. contractor is at work re-grad-mg and widening over a distance ot one mile, and the work is well forward. A contractor is also engaged quarrying and carting stone, while men are engaged knapping. “Gisborne-Wairca, via Morere (Borough boundary to Mntawhero Saleyards) : The (del surface lias been scarified, re-graded and all weak places built up with additional metal and rolled. The top course is now being laid and a start has been made with the spraying of bitumen. After this week the work should advance rapidly.”
