KAITI DRAIN A GE

STORMWATER PROBLEM IN OUTEIt AREA. BOROUGH DOES NOT WANT REPETITION. A FURTHER DEPUTATION. The liability or otherwise cl the Cook County ' ratepayers to bear portion of the cost of stormwater drainage in outer Haiti was discussed by members of the Cook County Council yesterday. A deputation from the Boroimh Council comprising the Mavor (Mr. G. Wildish) and Crs. L. T. Burnard, ,H N. Bullard aud H. E. Maude, urged the necessity of the Cook County contributing to the drainage scheme. The subject was opened by the Mayor, who stated that the matter was of vital importance and he considered a scheme could be evolved which could be carried out without necessitating the raising of a loan by the Cook County, which, he contended, could find the money out of maintenance. The Borough Council was prepared to grant a subsidy towards the cost of the scheme. It was essential that the work should be done and a round-table conference should be all that was necessary to arrive at an amicable agreement. Prompt action was needed to save a repetition of the damage that had occurred through inadequate drainage in previous years. The question had to be settled sooner or later and he was certain that it could be overcome without a loan. Cr. L. T. Burnard suggested that each body should appoint a committee and formulate a definite proposal. Cr. G. M. Reynolds stated that be had been the member of a previous committee investigating the problem and be was convinced that the position was difficult to overcome. As the Cook County ratepayers did not suffer from the stormwater they would object to being taxed for any proposal. It had been suggested by the County Engineer (Mr. J. J. Keane) that the drains should be kept open this season anci see if the stormwater could be disposed of in that way. it was finally decided that a committee comprising Crs. C. Matthews, D. J. Parker and W. G. Sherratt meet a committee from the Borough Council on tho question.
