THE EVACUATION PROBLEM. (Received Jhn. 24, 5.5 p.m.) _BERLIN, Jan. 23. The Reichstag unanimously decided that the Government should do its utmost to insist that the evacuation of the first occupation zone should he followed by a corresponding diminution of the occupying forces.—Reuter. A ONE-DAY STRIKE. PARSS, Jan. 23. The Stock Exchange strike was purely a one-day affair. Work will be resumed on 'Monday, when the Chamber will debate the Finance Committee’s proposals regarding the increased tax on transactions.—Reuter. ATHLETE’S TRAGIC DEATH. PARIS, Jan. 23. Robert Mare, a former aviator and a noted French Rugby footballer, and one of the best sprinters, was shot in his own bachelor flat. He was sent to hospital, but died. Albert Lancel, head of a firm of silversmiths, went to the flat and found his wife there. Madame Lancel shrieked and fainted. It is alleged that Lancel, who was arrested, fired three shots. INCOME TAX DISPUTE. LONDON, Jan.-22. The House of Lords dismissed an appeal interesting to Australians and New' Zealanders employed in Britain. Harry Hartland, an employee of the New Zealand Shipping Company, appealed against his income tax assessment. Counsel explained that Hartland’s salary was £s€o, upon which the Company paid £BO income tax. The authorities declared that the £BO constituted an addition to the salary and assessed Hartland on £6BO.
