Harry Hartland, an employee of the New Zealand Shipping Company, appealed against his income tax assessment. Counsel explained that Hartland’s salary was £s€o, upon which the Company paid £BO income tax. The authorities declared that the £BO constituted an addition to the salary and assessed Hartland on £6BO.
