TRAGEDY- OF LOST BEAUTY
VEILED WOAIAN HIDES FOR ' THIRTY YEARS,
A young Staffordshire girl, whoso beauty was spoiled by smallpox, made a vow that she would never be seen again. For thirty years she has lived her life of seclusion until recently, when she was lying ill in the infirmary at Stourbridge. Aliss Emily Mountford was one of a family living at Pensett, South Staffordshire. She and her sisters were nil good-looking girls, but after she suffered from smallpox 30 years ago Emily’s face was badly marked. One day whilst in a grocer’s shop •die overheard some women say that her beauty had been marred by the disease. She took it so much to heart that she declared she would never he seen again. •This vow she kept, and has lived in seclusion ever since.
• She took walks at night with her face hidden under a shawl, and these perambulations were usually in the direction of her old home, known as Oorbyer’s Hall, Locally she almost came to he regarded as a ghost.
