Cross-examining Sir Michael O’D\vyer ex-Governor-General of Punjab Mr Schwabe, for the defence, said hd was going to contend that wibat happened at Amritsar, wffiere the -troops fired on the Jcrowd. was an atrocity with which plaintiff was satisfied. Mr Justice McCarJic: It might ba necessary, in order, to save the Empire to do tilings in such a serious situation which otherwise W'ould he unjustifiable. Mr Schwabe read extracts from Captain Dyer’s evidence. Sir Michael O’Dwyer said the facts differed almost completely fronn what he knew at the time of the incident. Probably he would have disapproved if the facts had been reported to him that way, hut lie still thought Cap tain Dyer justified in opening fire, knowing what ho (witness) did of the crowd. .
