TARIFF RECIPROCITY.

POSITION OF AUSTRALIAN GOODS. WARNING TO MINISTER.

DUNEDIN, Feb. 23. A deputation of Dunedin manufacturers waited on the Minister of Customs, the Hon. Downie Stewart, relative to his visit to Australia in connection with a reciprocal tariff. They pointed out that in many industries Australia was or threatened to become cur greatest competitor, and in her protection policy had shown utter disregard for the Dominion, the present desire for reciprocity being purely self-interest. They submitted that in regard to goods manufactured in the Dominion the taxes imposed should be not lower than those now obtaining under, the third schedule. The deputation expressed a hope that the Minister would make a satisfactory arrangement by allowing Australian lines not manufactured here entry on favored terms in exchange for a similar concession for selected Dominion products. The deputation emphasised the point that they wanted the same terms as Australia. The Minister, in reply, dealt with the question whether the treaty would remain in abeyance while being discussed in the Dominion. It might he possible to bring it into force tentatively, then allowing time for consideration if finally adopted. Much of the Minister’s reply was treated confidpntially*—P.A."
