BOWLING.

NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT. SIMSON SCORES A WIN. The final of the New Year tournament was got off on the Turanganui green yesterday, in the presence of a numerous attendance of interested spectators. The contestants were I. S. Simson and J. Martin. The event excited much interest in that both skips were well-known Turanganui players. Martin’s team led off the first head with 1 by good play on the part of the skip, and Simson responded with 3on the second bead. Simson’s team then pulled well together and scored on most of the heads, finishing with 24 to 10.

The play of Simson’s team does not call for any particular comment. All played weli together, supporting their skiji and doing good duty when necessary. Martin’s team were too anxious and nervous and not seeming to

“get hold” of the green, had to bow to the inevitable. TOURING TEAMS.

This morning, the majority of the local bowlers taking part in the Northern Association’s tournament leave for Auckland. The teams are as follow:

Gisborne.—A. Rj Gatland, A. Zachariah, F. Eure, and W. iSSmith (skip); T. Leslie, R. Cf. Crawford, R. \Y.. Kyme, and R. Robertson '(skip); AY. Pettie, J. Coleman, J. Greig, and J. Ponsford (skip) ; S. Wootton, G. McMillan, L. T. Brown, and M. \Y. Craig (skip).

Turanganui.—J. Martin, Neal, Tbelwall and Sawye?. Simson, owing to pressure of business, was unable to go.

The Turanganui team, which went to Napier and Messrs Maher and Bullock, Gisborne Club, returned by the Takapuna. yesterday, all having spent a most enjoyable time in the sunny centre.

SOUTHLAND TOURNAMENT. [PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM! INVERCARGILL, Jan. 3. The Southland howling tournament was continued to-day "in beautiful weather. The final of the provincial champion rinks was won by J. Findlay’s (Te Rangi) rink, which heat J. Hains’ (North End) rink by 19 to 15,

The city rinks were won by Yates (Northern), who defeated Lillicrap (North End) by 20 to 19. The suburban rinks was won by Holloway (North End), who defeated Brown (Gore) by 24 to 13.
