PERSONAL NOTES.

Nurses Butler 'and Smith have resigned from the Gisborne Hospital staff.

Nurse __ Jean McCormack, Native Health Nurse, lias been granted one month’s leave of absence.

Dr. J. E. Iv Brown, house surgeon at the Gisborne Hospital, was last evening granted leave, which he proposes spending in the South. A scoial gathering was held in the Tiniroto Hall last Friday evening, the object being a farewell gathering to Miss Cousens, who for some time past has been a resident of Tiniroto. A presentation of a solid silver teapot was made on the occasion, and much regret was felt at Miss Cousens’ departure from the district. The able assistance which was often given by Miss Cousens at the various social gatherings held m Tiniroto will lie keenly missed by the local residents, who have a wide reputation of being the most enthusiastic 'social {entertainers of any district around Gisborne or Wairoa.

At the breaking up of Te Knraka School yesterday a presentation of a complete set of Shakespeare’s books, handsomely bound, was made to Miss Cormaek, the headmistress, in recognition of the pains she had- taken in working up the recent school concert. The presentation was made by Elsie Allen, one of the senior girls. Mr P. J. Sefton, headmaster testified to the excellent work Miss Cormaek had done in connection with the concert, and remarked that the present was well deserved. Miss Cormaek suitably responded. Mr Sefton and Miss Cormhck went South by the Takapuna’ last night on their summer vacation. Mr Sefton will spend most of his time in Ashburton and Banks’ Peninsula, while Miss Cormaek will spend her holiday in Central Otago.

A pleasant little function took place at the “Times” office yesterday afternoon, when the staff assembled in the reporters’ room to farewell Air R. Algoe, chief reporter, who leaves to-morrow to take up an appointment on tlie literary staff of the “X.Z. Times.” On behalf of the staff. Air J. A. Maekay, managing-editor, presented Air Algoe with a solid silver stop-watch as a token of the esteem in which he was held. In making the presentation. Air Alackay referred to the conscientious manner in which the recipient, had carried out his duties during the two years lie had been on tho staff, and stated that if he displayed the same enthusiasm in his work in the future lie should rise high in journalistic circles. Tlie heads of the different departments also v testified to the high esteem in which Mr Algoe was held on the staff, and wished, him every success in the future. In replying, Mr Algoe stated that his only reason for severing his connection with the “Gisborne Times” was in order to gain further experience in a wider field. He would always look back with pleasure on the years he had spent on the “Times,” and anything lie could do in the future to assist the paper would be most willingly done. Cheei*s were then given for Air Algoe. and a pheasant little gathering terminated. Air Algoe will be succeeded on the “Times” staff by Mr Hirst, of Wellington, who, in addition to considerable colonial experience, has had the advantage of having been connected with the literary departments of a number of important Home journals, including tho “London Times',” tlie “London Daily Telegraph,” and the “London Evening News.”
