HARE MATENGA.
BEFORE THE MAGISTRATE. REMANDED ON THREE CHARGES. The Magistrate’s Court was crowded yesterday morning when Hare Matenga was brought up on three charges of alleged theft. The first case was the theft of a horse in September, 1902, the property of another native, Holiepa Kakuroa. On the application of Sergeant Wif.liams a remand for 8 days was granted, His Worship remarking that if the police were not ready to proceed then, a further adjournment could bo made.
Accused was also charged with having stolen a silver watch and chain, silver pendant and gold pendant from the residence of Mr. A. Brothers at Motu on October 12, 1907. A remand was granted in this case until to-day at 11.30 a.m. A further, charge was presented of stealing on October 21st a doublebarrelled gun, a pair of boots, and a pocket-book, the property of Wm. Dooley, of Motu. A remand was granted in the case until to-day. Accused made no objection to the remands being granted, and volunteered to make a. statement.
His Worship said that ihe did not want a statement then, as iit was not the proper time to make it.
