As the coach was descending the “Devil’s Elbow” the horses bolted towards Kenvay’s Creek, and though the driver, Mr. Bowden, managed to negotiate the hill safely, the coach struck the bank with considerable force when nearing the creek. The coach was badly smashed, and all the occupants were thrown out. Air. J. L. Perry, one of the passengers. Mas bumped up against the hank. He had three ribs broken, his face Mas badly cut- about, and he was bruised about tho legs. The other passengers, a. young lady, a gentleman, and a lad, escaped with a severe shaking. The passengers were conveyed to Air Kenway’s homestead. where their injuries M-ere attended to. All the passengers, with the exception of Air. Perry, were later able to leave for their homes. Air. Perry will, probably have to remain at Air. Kenway’s residence for about a fortnight.

Lysnar gave notice of motion at tho County Council meeting yesterday that the matter be decided at next meeting. This would givo them time to express their views. At the 'annual meeting of the AVaiapu Hospital Board held oil December 18th, Mr. A. B. Williams was voted to the chair for tho ensuing year. Mr. AV. O’Ryan was appointed lion, secretary and treasurer. Mr. A. P. Durrant was appointed clerk. At a meeting of the School 'Bath Committee held on 'Tuesday evening, it was announced that £3O had been collected siuco last meeting. Owing to counter-attractions there was noi a large attendance, and it was decided that active operations bo discontinued until after the holidays. Last night, ‘Air. AA’itty, secretary of the Harbor Board, received a telegram from Captain Gumming, stating that file Board’s new launch had had a row sfc satisfactory trial, doing 9 knots in a choppy, heavy sea. Shi will bo shipped from Auckland .by the Squ ill, leaving to-day. The Poverty Bay Iload Board cash account was handed to the County Council yesterday, showing a credit balance of £32 11s 3d, tho liabilities being £5 i7s. Mr. Cuff, the clerk claimed £2O for a year’s salary, having received no notice. The mattei -is to be looked into.

In regard to Hospital representation, Cr. Lysnar moved at yesterday'! meeting of tho County Council tiiai the Hospital Trustees be -written to. stating that the Council claimed the right to have another member. Cap tain Tucker did not think that tin Council was entitled to a further member. Cr. Matthews said it was a thing on which a Judge’s decision should be obtained. It was decided to write to the Trustees on tho mattor.

At the meeting of the County Council yesterday, Cr. Kenway asked if it was legal for tho ranger to impounu horses on Sunday. The Clerk saiu that it was an oxien question. It was not said that ho could not. The Chairman said he could receive on Sunday. It appeared that exception was taken to an occurrence ol : this nature, as tho ltanger only took f -wo horses, which were easily driven, and left three others. Cr. Kenway said that the others jumped into privat.. property, and the Hanger -was helpless.

The railway crossing over Read’s. Quay is a dangerous spot for vehicles of all descriptions, and carters using the road when by the goods shed in particular would welcome an alteration. It is necessary to cross the rails at an awkward angle, with the result that axles and wheels are severely wrenched. Yesterday afternoon a dray belonging to the Sheepfarmers’ Co. had a wheel broken while crossing this place, and the day before a lady in a buggy was almost capsized at the same spot. It is understood that the Railway Department disclaims liability for damage thus caused, but there is a general feeling that the Department should be called upon to remedy the present difficulty. Some discussion about Kirktown Extended township took place at the County Council meeting yesterday. The Clerk complained of 'inconvenience in the numbering of sections, as no less than 20 were numbered 1. It was decided to put the matter before the Survey Department. The Engineer brought ui> the matter of standard specifications for roads am: bridges for uniformity. A few words occurred between Crs. Ivenwny and Lysnar. the latter desiring the Engineer to go into the matter and submit a report to the Council. Cr. Kenway said that the Council was unable to decide, and it had to hr left to the Engineer; the Council knew no more of engineering than it did of ballooning. The proposal was carried.
