LAWN TENNIS.
THE GISBORNE CLUB’S TOURNAMENT.
Tho Gisborne Tennis Club’s Easter tournament was commenced on the Club’s courts at TCaiti on .Saturday. Then' were a good number of ■ spectators during the day, arid some exciting play was witnessed, especially in which Macfnrlnup and AV. Coleman bent Willook and Evans, the .vinueis total being 106 and the game 70 up. In bis singles games (60 up) with S. A. Cover, Maefarlano bad to concede tiis opponent 33 points, and finally won, after a close, game, at 80 —78; but in tho second round AA’illock, with a concession of 38 points boat Macfarlalie easily. Most of tlio contests wore well advanced at tlio close of tho. day’s play. Afternoon tea ivns dispensed during the afternoon by the ladies of the Club. Tlio finals of all the games wero played on Monday afternoon in tlio presence of a large number of' spectators. Tho pla ovs were very keen throiighaut the tournament. The matches were all got off sharp to time. Amongst the visitors S. Mnc.farlane proved himself an able exponent of the game, and if in future years a few more players of bis ills calibre can be i.filuccd to visit tlio Ray, tennis should groutlv improve. The 'umpiring was .willingly done b.v members of the Club and outsiders. and gave every satisfaction. Tlio chief contest of tho. tournament, tlio men’s championship doubles, was •von by Haw ley and Maefarlano after ■\ closely-contested game.
