RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
MAN KILLED : ANOTHER MUTILATED.
[By Telegraph— Press Association. Invercargill, last night. A shocking railway accident occurred last night near Morton Mains. On the arrival of a special train with mails at Bdendale, the driver found intermingled in the cow-catcher the wheel of a railway tricycle.
Parties searched the line in the vicinity of Morton Mains, and Frank Thomas, assistant-ganger, was found dead, and Lawrence Fraser, a ganger, terribly mutilated, so much so that his life is despaired of.
In view of the passage of the special and Ministerial trains, some men were ordered to inspect the road, and it appears that when on this duty the accident occurred. It is said they left home early for this purpose, and could have been back in time to avoid risk.
The night was clear, but there are some grades in the neighborhood, and y it is supposed the train came suddenly upon them on the crest of a rise.
