[by telegraph, press ASSOCIATION.I Wellington, last night: The Supreme Court was occupied the greater part of the day in hearing a charge against Patrick Campbell, aged 29 years, who pleaded not guilty on indictment of having eommitted assault with intent on a young woman at Karori on August 13. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, and •Judge Edwards imposed a sentence of ten years’ hard labor. The evidence showed that prisoner had assailed his victim with great violence, from the effects of which she has not yet recovered. Prisoner’s record was bad. In Hawke's Bay in 1894 he was sentenced to five years and flogged for rape, and has also been convicted of crimes of violence and indecency. His Honor said be would not order him to be flogged again, as he had shown himself to be brutish in character.
