Fiji and Federal Tariff.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night

Fiji news states that a deputation of commercial men* waited on the ActingAssistant Colonial Secretary, in the absence of the Administrator, in reference to tho duties imposed by the Federal tariff on goods exported by Fiji. Tho Warden stated that it was evilent it would bo impossible to send maize or fruit to Sydney at a profit to tho grower. With regard to maize, Sydney was their only market, as New Zealand did not require any. The possibility of a reciprocal tariff was mentioned, but it was pointed out that if they forced Australia in that way New Zealand would ask similar concessions. Tho advisability of opening fresh markets was urged. Mr Sutherland, in reply, said no doubt the tariff was a serious blow to Fiji. He promised to send a formal protest on the matters mentioned.
