SUGAR INDUSTRY.
A FAT TIME, WITH LEAN ONES THREATENING.

The Colonial Sugar Co.’s profits ior the half-year were £93,927. A dividend of ten per cent was declared. The report adopted stated that the crops of New Eolith Wales and Queensland suffered much from frost, and Fiji from draught. It is improbable that the yield of the present season will reach the estimate.
The Chairman stated the.t the stoppages of the employment of Kanakas in Queensland must necessarily cause a collapse of the sugar industry within the tropics. For the consequences of this proposed act of injustice the company was fully prepare!, but it was to be feared that the same could not be said about many farmers. lie expected that the change of duties would not materially alter the position. The depression of the sugar market was serious, and the company must prepare for a lower range of prices than previously allowed.
