WELLINGTON ABATTOIRS
AN AGGRAVATING HITCH IN REGARD TO SITE.
(Special to Times.) Wellington, last night
An aggravating hitch had occurred in connection with the selection of a site for the abattoirs which the city is required by the law to erect before April next. The Abattoris Committee of the Council devoted a considerable time to the subject, and after making the fullest investigations, recommended that the slaughter-houses should be erected on a piece of land about four miles out of the town at Ngatauranga. The Committee’s report was adopted, and the City Engineer was instructed to prepare plans and specifications of the necessary buildings. The Minister for Agriculture has now declined to sanction the proposed site, because ho says sundry butchers are opposed to it, and it is not desirable to have abattoirs so near a centre of the population. The Minister had previously given the assurance that any one of tlie three sites under offer would have his approval, but the Cabinet Ministers are privileged to change their minds.
