Whataupoko Road Board.

,To the Editor of the Ti.mks.) Sm,—Mr A. F. Matthews in your last issue says the cost of administration of the above Board for the year ending 31st March, 1901, was X‘l3U 15s 3d, which is 10 per cent, on the total revenue. This amount of .£63 15s 3d only includes salary, ollico expense of management. To this must ho added tho further items : Hire of hall and cost of valuation roll, .fi t •ts ; legal expenses and summons fees, .£lB lls 2il, which is clearly cost of administration, making a total of XS6 10s sd, or 14 per cent., as I stated through your contemporary's columns, which is rather under the real cost, its practically half of the total revenue was rates collected on special loans, for which the Act provides for an allowance for cost of collection of not exceeding 10 per cent. After this allowance has been made for tho collection of interest it will really leave IS per cent, as the cost of administration on the general revenue of the Board. Add to this the 50 per cent, of the present general rates which the County Council receives from the ratepayers, and it will be seen that tho Board is only left with 32 per cent, of the total general rovenuc paid by ratepayers for general work, and even with this condition of affairs existing it is seriously urged that amalgamation is not dcsiiable '! —I am, etc., W. Douglas Lys.xar.
