Amalgamation Proposals.
(To the Editor of the Times.) Sir, —I have read the many letters appearing in the I'imks regarding the amalgamation of the suburbs with tho Borough, and the conclusion I have arrived at is that it would not bo wise for the Borough to enter into this matrimonial contract. It is a question of taking them for better or worse, for richer or poorer,.and as far as I can see the suburbs will provo a great burden on the town. The small amount they will contribute to the general fund will not compensate the Borough for the outluy-that will be required to extend tho water and drainage schemes to both places, Tho Borough, with a prospective rateable value "of .£-10,000, cau well afford to borrow £75.000, but it cannot entertain a loan of .£120,000, which amount will be required if the suburbs aro to come in. I have discussed the question with many ratepayers, and they are at one with me in regard to this matter.—l am, etc., Looker-on.
