When Mrs Keane and family wore about to retire, she was met by her sister, Mrs Sylvia, who exclaimed: “ What a terrible smell of gas. There must be a leak in the gas-pipe.”
Mrs Keane entered the room to look if tho burners were turned off, and had scarcely raised <the candle above iicr head when an explosion occurred, which hurled her on the floor, and set lire to her hair and clothing; also to that of Mrs Sylvia, and set tho whole room in a blaze.
Mr Keane was going out of the back door when he heard the report, and, returning, was met by the full force of tho flames. Ho rushed into tho sitting-ro A m, tore down tho burning curtains i;ud blinds, and succeeded in extinguishing the fire. Tho two ladies wore seriously burned about tho hands and face. Mr Keane was also badly burned. The sufferers are now on a fair way to recovery'. The explosion was so violent that seventeen panes of glass were blown out, and one-half of a French door, opening from tho sitting-room on to the verandah, was completely torn from its hinges.
