FIRES WILFULLY CAUSED.
PECULIAR EVIDENCE. STRANGE ATTEMPT TO FASTEN GUILT ON A YOUNG WOMAN. A VINDICATION. [By Telegraph—fres3 Association.] Wellington, last night. The Coroner’s jury sat till a lato hour to-night hearing evidence with regard to two outbreaks of fire in a house occupied by Rumgay, at Khandallah, and which was insured for L3OO. The evidence indicated that at least ono of tho fires had been started from inside the house. A feature of the affair was that Rumgay had tried to fasten suspicion on a young woman, and the latter on a man. In evidence it was stated that tho suspicions of the former were groundless. Tho jury returned a verdict that both fires wore wilfully caused by some person or persons unknown. It added a rider expressing sympathy with the woman whoso namo had been mentionod, and stilting that she left the Court without a stain on her character.
