AN UNFORTUNATE EXPEDITION

FIFTEEN TBOOP HOBBES DIE ON THE EOAD. • a

[by ieleohaph—pbess association.]

Napier, last night. The Wairarapa Mounted Native Troopers, who are on their way to Botorua to take part in the celebrations to welcome the Duke and Duchess of York, met with a mishap en route. To-day Mr A. L. D. Fraser, M.TI.E., received a wire from the officer in charge of the troops, informing him that fifteen of tho horses had died on arrival at Tarawera. It is supposed that the horses died from the effocts of poisoning. It is conjectured by travellers who know this road that tho troopers must have allowed their horses to drink at the first of two crossings of the Waiponga stream, about two miles from Tarawera. Several instances have occurred of valuable animals having died from drinking at this crossing, and most of the ole hands now go on to the second crossing before permitting their horses to drink. Mr Fraser immediately made arrangements for a coach to convey the horseless members of the troop on to Botorua.
