ATHLETIC SPORTS.
ATHLETES WANT A GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, Bray 7. At a meeting of the Council of tho League of New Zealand 'Wheelmen, tho application of Amos to have his record of 31 4-sth seconds for a quarter of a mile, standing start, at Timaru on Biarch -18th, recognised as a New Zealand record was granted. Tho Chairman (Mr W. G'. . Atackl brought up tho question of the Government being asked to subsidise cycling and athletic sport in holding of their championship meeting. Ho said it was now generally recognised that such sports materially assisted in building up tho country, and consequently deserved encouragement. At the present time tho public refused to patroniso sports gatherings to the extent necessary to make them financially successful, and unless some outside assistance was obtained thero was a danger of their falling back. The sum of £l5O would provide all that was necessary to assist tho championship meetings of all the Christchurch sports bodies that hold them.
It was decided to approach the Govern ment on the matter.
