A QUESTION OF FREIGHT.

(By Telegraph —Press Association.) Wellington, last night. An action of interest to flaxmillers was hoard in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. J. R. Shanscll, tlaxmillor, sued the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company for £l2 7s sd, alleged over charge on carriage of flax. It appeared that the plaintiff had on various dates between January and June of 1900 consigned from Otaki, which is 37 miles from 'Wellington, to his agents in AVellington flax amounting altogether to 127 tons, which had been cut under the contract between the Government and defendant company entered into at the time of the formation of the line. The company is entitled to charge only the same mileage rates ns are charged on the Government, lino. The Government charge for 37 miles is 6s 6d per ton, and defendants charged plaintiff Ss 5d per ton. The action, which is one brought by plaintiff as representing a number of tlaxmill-owners in Foxton district, is for the purpose of recovering the difference between the rate under tho Government tariff and that charged by defendants. Judgment was reserved.
