Tolago Notes.
(times correspondent).
The effect of a wet season is apparent on our roads, many of which would give one the impression that it was well on into winter. Mr Morning has in hand the much-needed and long-delayed work at Mangapeka. Mr McNeil is also making progress on Tolago Hill. As usual, the Council has let the contract late in the year, which, combined with the traffic and extra wet season, will have the inevitable result of making the roads more like a quagmire than they otherwise would be. The Aotea on her last trip landed timber for a new store at Hauiti, which is now in the course of construction. _ Mr D. Reid, who has been manager of the well known Lowden Hill Estate here for some years, has severed his connection therewith, and is, I believe, going to reside in Gisborne. McKinley’s coach continues to be well patronised by the travelling public, and, notwithstanding the state of the roads, the popular “ Fred ” Newey manages to get up in good time. A painful accident happened on Thursday, to Mr Smith’s youngest son, who split his foot open with an axe. The wound was stitched by Mr Rowsell. A cricket match between the two local teams, Hauiti v. Tologa Bay, is to be played here on Monday, when a good game should result. A dance will also be held in the evening.
